HUGE DISCLAIMER: “buy a whole new transmission” will be ignored. I’m not doing that. I would rather tear down the entire transmission (ATF AND GTF) than replace it. I have unlimited time and patience and will tear it down to the main seal at the output shaft if need be.
This is a teardown of the old clutch basket out of my boyfriends 2012 Audi S4. I’m curious what the condition of this clutch basket denotes to those who are experienced in this area. It’s obviously burnt to all shit on some of the steelies, but when talking to my boyfriends uncle who has been a mechanic for about 25+ years (mostly a Harley mechanic) he expressed that it “wasn’t even that bad, and the steelies should be black.” He later made remarks about how something probably wasn’t sealing well with the clutch basket and it probably wasn’t getting any hydraulic pressure.
Error codes: P1743 00 (2272) , P27870
I am starting to suspect the same thing, my few rebuttals were that months ago when I was running diagnostic tests it told me k1 and k2 pressure readings for the clutch were good besides k1 hitting the pressure ceiling at 16 BAR or PSI (i can’t remember the unit of measure sorry) when pushing it at all. Out of safety, the car would drop the gearbox into neutral but it wouldn’t go into any limp mode or anything. The other thing I could think of was the fact that the car is supposed to protect itself from extreme heat, so if the clutch basket truly wasn’t getting any fluid and it was heating up the car would drop it into neutral. HOWEVER k2 worked perfectly, it is the smaller unit and I’m sure it takes less pressure to actuate so I’m really unsure and I’m in a logical Chinese finger trap with this car.
I’m very aware that the coloration of the clutch disks is very dark for how they start out. I’ve also heard that if you soak them for a little they return to that color. (X to doubt lmfao.)
I have already done the timing chains (upper tensioner was smoked on the left bank), at this moment the replacement of the entire clutch pack has been done and I plan on replacing the actuators and solenoids on my mechatronic unit if need be. Off subject but I plan on replacing the PCV, walnut blasting the intakes, water pump, serp tensioner, sc tensioner, oil check valves, thermostat, engine mounts and driveshaft.
Any mistakes made in this video I’ve already reviewed and corrected. I’m quite new to working on cars like this, meaning this is the first car I’ve done anything on besides gravy work (eg. suspension, brakes and other easy things water pump, pulleys, a/c unit).
I apologize for all the run on sentences, I don’t get to share what I do in my off hours often. I apologize a TLDR will not be provided as I am the worst at shortening things down (obviously)
Thank you for taking the time to read this!! Also lmk if you want pictures of photos of anything else I did, I documented it all!!
**Edit: meant to put March production in the title not May, whoops lol
