Structure Question

Structure Question

I want to extend the roof over a side entrance that has a cement pad extending 5 feet from the house, covering it with a roof structure. I don’t have any experience adding structures to a house, and I’m just a regular homeowner. I won’t be doing the work myself, but I’d like to speak with a local contractor in a way that sounds informed. It’s also fine to say it’s not recommended, as long as there’s an explanation why.

I have a simple gable-roof home with a side entrance where I’d like to add a small roof. The entrance is roughly in the middle of the house, and its trim meets the soffit, which might make things tricky. I’m not a builder, just a homeowner, so I want to know two things: (1) What’s the proper roof structure for this situation? (2) Is this project too basic for a structural engineer, or can a roofer handle it?
