The City just issued an RFQ to expand our Cedar Breaks reclaimed water system and move toward a higher standard known as “Type 1” reuse.

Here’s why this matters in plain English:

• More usable water, less waste

Instead of using drinking water for irrigation, we can reuse highly treated water safely and efficiently.

• Better for public spaces

Type 1 allows use in areas where people are nearby, like the golf course, trails around Cedar Breaks and, over time, places like Sunset Park.

• Better fields for our kids

Long term, this opens the door to keeping our ball fields and soccer fields in better condition without increasing demand on our drinking water supply.

• More flexibility

It allows irrigation during the day when needed, not just overnight.

This project is about planning ahead. As Lago Vista grows, we need to be smarter with every gallon of water we have.

Over the past year, I’ve worked with our partners to help move this forward, including securing $750,000 in federal funding that we believe can help cover much of the modular system needed to reach Type 1 standards.

We’re also working through the permitting process with TCEQ now to make this a reality.

This is the kind of infrastructure investment that pays off for years to come. While we continue to evaluate and work on the expansion of both our drinking and wastewater plants, I will continue to seek state and federal funding to offset the local costs of these investments while we improve our systems.

In June, we will also be discussing improved testing and transparency for our drinking water. Excited this RFQ is kicking off some important improvements in Lago Vista. More details to come!
