The Wasp Factory Ending
So, I finished The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks a few weeks ago, and one thing still confuses me about the ending.
Frank spends the entire book being a misogynist. Like, it’s a big part of him, he hates all women. Just despises them. It’s very clear he believes women are terrible.
Then, at the end, it’s revealed that Frank was born a girl! His father just took advantage of the dog attack to give him hormones.
Okay, that’s a pretty cool plot twist! What’s Frank going to do? Will he hate himself for being born a girl? How will he view himself?
No? Instead he IMMEDIATELY accepts that fact. Frank even thinks his murders were his own feminine instinct to control life (I’m paraphrasing here.)
I found it an unsatisfying end to a really cool book. It could have been played so well, but instead it felt like all previous characterization was just retconned for the end.
What did you folks think? Did I miss something?
