How do I investigate a basement mystery that may or may not involve weed?
I (25F) have developed a suspicion—perhaps a theory, perhaps a full-blown conspiracy—that my mom and her husband might be smoking weed in our basement.
They spend a lot of time in one specific room down there. My mom already uses it as her cigarette cave, which is fair enough, but some time ago she also asked me for incense. At the time I thought nothing of it. Now I sit here, connecting imaginary dots like a man with a corkboard and red string.
There have also been a few comments that sound completely normal… but if you tilt your head and squint at them, could also be code. Or I’ve simply lost the plot. Both are possible.
For the record, I am not against weed in any way!! If anything, I have the general aura of someone who should be high at all times, despite not actually being so. So this is not a moral concern. It’s more that
My mom has always been very anti-weed, so this would be a surprising character development
Her husband has a bit of a complicated past, and I’d rather he not get into trouble again(weed is not legalized in my country.)
And, perhaps most importantly, this is my home too, and I feel like I’m living in a mild mystery novel
I don’t really want to ask directly, because my mom has a habit of smoothing things over instead of giving straight answers, and I suspect I’d leave the conversation more confused than when I entered it. I also don't want to seem crazy paranoid if I'm totally wrong!
So my question is:
Aside from smell (which I am useless at detecting), are there any signs of weed use I could look for? Objects, habits, strange little clues—anything that would confirm or disprove my increasingly elaborate basement theory?
Edit: Some of y'all are taking this way too seriously! I have no bad intentions, nor do I care much about whether they smoke or not. I do, however, care about figuring out if I'm right or wrong in my suspicions, because, well, I'm curious.
