Backup system. A six bay Nas or change from SHR to JBOD.
I currently have a 1520+ and about 64 TB worth of Backup data due to the five 18 TB drives in it. I just got the warning that my hyper Backup is filling up and it’s about at 10% so I wiped it out doing a complete again but it got me thinking. Should I look at buying a six nas and adding a 18 TB drive to it or should I look at buying the dx517 and attach it to the 1520. The nas I would buy would be a 1621+. I’m primarily using the 1520 just as a backup target and it doesn’t do anything else besides that which is why I am considering the 1621+ as a option as i do not have a performance concern. math wise I can probably sell the 1520 for about $650. I can probably find a 16 for about 900. The processor is of no concern to me as I have a device that functions as my main server. Unfortunately, hard drives are expensive right now so I’m not quite sure if I’m willing to spend 500+ dollars on a 18 TB drive right no.
The alternative would be to change the format of the from SHR to JBOD.
edit: so I am rebuilding my backup and I think what I’m going to do is a bit of data consolidation and try to address the main issues of the growth in the which might be the DVD collection that I have and some movement that I did.. so I’ll focus on cleaning that up first and if later I need to upgrade them I will, but for now, I’ll just do a rebuild and see where I lie.
thanks y’all
