Every page was illustrated in a painterly style. it was fantasy, as the primates could talk. I am not sure if it was a lemur or not.

Essentially the main protagonist gets framed for stealing fruits or something and he gets exiled from his tree and his tribe. He goes on a journey across fantasy Africa and eventually comes home to clear his name.

Been trying to find it off and on for years, and have not been able to find it.
