Just joined as a PhD, have some questions about student life

How conservative is Bloomington? I’m an immigrant and I have concerns about the state being very red. Does that leach into the campus?
I’m not very political but I would want to know considering the current environment. Be honest, you can really help me out.
What’s the pride scene on campus? 👀

So made a post about my thoughts on the Leica camera and I had some doubts about the “goodness” of the cameras. Just the camera and from a technical standpoint that too. And that was enough for people to dig up my chat history and shame me in the comment section. One dude told me to “get a life” cuz I said I didn’t like the camera. The other dude shamed me for a grad admission I did not get. Mind you, grown ass men and women, loosing their shit and harassing someone cuz a stranger didn’t like the camera they sold their kidney for 😂 the jerk is STRONGGG here. I don’t think coffee and film snobs are as insufferable as some of these jerk offs.

Guys, never owned the thing, but am a physicist and have been around optics all my life. First things first,

Manufacturing a film fed Leica in our workshop (National Lab) would cost a LOT less than what they charge. It’s so simple, the design is literally mundane. Which is insulting, it’s a mundane design. So…. What are they charging for? Quality? I mean people realize that magnesium isn’t tomatoes right? and all magnesium alloys are the fucking same unless you add impurity which is rare with modern standard metallurgical processes. It’s easier than baking bread. Also, the design is simple, so it’s not hard to mold it. To give you context I know a guy who can make it for $150. And it’s a film camera. So nothing more is being added to it. So at max the thing is like 300 dollars

The lens, it’s literally the simplest optical designs for lenses.

What the fuck are they even charging for?? I have never made a camera and I could not make a Nikon or Sony, but fuck I can make that hunk of metal.

Let’s forget the built. The body itself is outdated in design. It has no grip so it’s going to really dig into your hand if you are out for long. Also, the stability on that will be hard cuz you are quite literally pressing it between your finger tips (lot less stable than a grip that you can grab cuz then your arm can act as a gimbal, but not when you are pinching the stupid thing) so your photos are not going to remotely stable.

So, really what are they charging for?

It’s not innovative, the design is outdate, and it looks bad
