Hi everyone,

I’m seriously exploring going into CS practice instead of only chasing corporate roles, and I’m a bit confused about whether to start independently or try partnering with an existing practicing CS/small firm.

For those in practice, how did you actually get started? Especially if you didn’t inherit a family practice or ready-made clients.

Some things I’m trying to understand:

  • How do people find partnership opportunities with other CS/CA/CMA professionals? Is it through ICSI networks, LinkedIn, local chapters, referrals, or just cold outreach?
  • If starting solo, how did you get your first few clients?
  • Is it smarter to associate with another practitioner first before opening independently?
  • Which areas are good for a beginner in practice to build around? Secretarial compliance? Incorporations? Certifications? FEMA? Startup advisory?
  • Realistically, how long did it take before practice became financially stable?
  • What mistakes should a new practitioner avoid?

I’d really value honest advice from people who built a practice from scratch. Sometimes employment feels uncertain and I’m wondering if practice may be a better long-term route, but I want to understand the ground reality before taking a step.

Would appreciate any guidance. Thanks!
