Changing Psychiatrists
I received my ADHD diagnosis about 18 months ago at the ripe old age of 43. The experience was, in one word, traumatic. But that’s a story for another post. The psychiatrist handed prescription authority over to my GP, who for 18 months, has made me feel judged, patronised and distrusted (yet another story for another post). I’ve started the process of looking for a new psychiatrist (I won’t return to the first one after the experience I had with her) because I will need a review in a few months to be able to continue to receive prescriptions for my medication. I also want to discuss medication options as I think I’ve recently started perimenopause and I’m not sure if (or how) it’s impacting on my medication effectiveness. I’ve contacted several clinics and they’re all saying I need to go through the entire assessment process from the start despite having a full report that details my assessment and diagnosis. I’m completely dumbfounded. I don’t understand why it’s necessary. It’s not like I’m going to be miraculously cured of ADHD! I have my own tinfoil hat theories but I hate going down those type of rabbit holes. I‘m wondering if anyone else has had any similar experiences trying to change psychiatrists and if you were able to find a psychiatrist who is at the very least empathetic and reasonable and at the very best, neuroaffirming?
