I am one of those students who abstained. I voted because I cared, but abstained as I saw no candidate qualified for the positions they were running for. I thought my vote will have its meaning, that it will reflect the outcome of the university election.
After seeing that abstentions “do not affect the determination of winners,” what’s even the point of giving students that option in the first place? Why does our abstain hold no real meaning? Why is FEU tolerating this kind of political environment where student dissatisfaction can simply be ignored?
I don’t want to just sit here and complain about it online. I want to know what actions students can actually take when they feel unheard by the system. Can we raise formal concerns to the administration? File an appeal? Organize a dialogue? Push for policy changes regarding how abstentions are treated in future elections?
