I am writing this to provide information to others who are in a similar situation to the one I was in. I searched extensively on Reddit to find cases similar to mine and whether those individuals were ultimately granted a clearance. I want to share details about my case because, at times, I seriously questioned whether obtaining a clearance would even be possible for me.
I did end up receiving my Secret clearance, but the process took over a year and included two interviews spaced roughly a year apart. The timing also coincided with major geopolitical events involving Iran, as well as government shutdowns, which likely did not help. My interim clearance was denied within weeks of submitting my application.
Info about my case:
- I was born in Iran.
- I immigrated to the U.S. during elementary school and became a U.S. citizen before turning 18.
- I held an Iranian passport until becoming a U.S. citizen.
- The last time I visited Iran was during my early high school years.
- I do not have immediate family in Iran, though I do have extended family there whom I occasionally speak with.
- Both of my parents still maintain active Iranian passports.
- I do not possess an active Iranian passport and do not claim Iranian citizenship. Since there are no Iranian embassies or consulates in the U.S., I have not formally renounce citizenship. During my second interview, I was asked whether I would be willing to take such steps if necessary, and I said yes.
I hope this information helps provide some perspective for others going through the clearance process with ties to Iran or other countries considered adversarial by the U.S.
