First of all: sorry but no sorry for crappy screenshot, it was either photo or this.
So, months after I got "Pedal to the metal" there was no fun in racing: championships were repeating themself, grinding achievements doesn't dive any joy, online lobbies felt empty, etc. So started trying out RWD cars and stopped on Porsche 911 GT. Been struggling for months, still felt like neutered horse even after tuning.
Today just happened I glanced around and spotted my VR headset that was collecting dust like for half of year. After all I decided why not give it a shot. Plugged in. Connected. It felt weird, even weirdly comfy, and what I immediately noticed:
- Depth perception: corners and whole road started feeling more real, there was no need for calculating breaking points, glancing at speedometer, everything become more natural
- Car dimensions: putting away low graphics setting, it became more easy to avoid obstacles and fit in tight corners
- Cornering and counter-steer: this kicked in when hopped in 911 GT, at some point I realized that it stopped spinning out down the mountain, powerslides started being more consistent and stock tuning was drivable. I finally stopped fighting the car and started using rear-engine weight as pendulum and insane traction to spring out on apex(funny enough, techniques from carting was constantly kicking in, kind of weird cause it's the only place where I grab on wheel, in DR2.0.. welp, still xbox-like controller)
- Overall awareness: sounds stupid, but car stopped being and image on the screen and it felt like I was sitting inside, even controlled vibration started being a little over enough, so had to turn it down a bit.
Speaking of numbers. My PB on Oberstein was 7:19, I managed to drop it to 6:35 in first try. The fastest I ever managed to put was 6:40 on Subaru S4 and 6:39 on BMW M1, and now 44 cut just by putting screen on my face. Maybe a little naive or obvious, still this is only place I could share my insight.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of massive "click" when switching something in sim racing or taking different approach?
