Showcase Saturday - Customise Monkeytype’s on-screen keyboard
Hi all,
When I first started learning to touch-type, I wanted color-coded keys to help me get started, but there wasn’t an easy way to do this. That gave me the idea to make an extension called Monkeytype Keymap+ that lets you customise the on-screen keyboard.
You can:
- Change the background or text color of individual keys
- Select multiple keys at once
- Quickly enable or disable the keymap
- Save your settings so they automatically apply whenever you open Monkeytype
I originally built it so I had a visual reference for the standard home-row finger layout while practising, and later extended it to allow full keyboard customisation. It also works with the React and Next keymap options.
If anyone wants to try it out or give feedback, it’s on the Chrome Web Store:

This is a small side project and completely free. If people have ideas or suggestions, I’d be happy to add new features.
Also, for anyone wondering about privacy: the extension does not collect any personal data. It only stores your key color settings locally using Chrome’s built-in storage.
I’ve attached a couple of screenshots as well!
