Taking leave during notice period.

Hi all,

Is taking leave during my notice period considered in bad taste?

Put in my resignation notice last week. It’s 4 weeks notice as of my contract. I have about 33 hours of unused leave and am thinking about taking a week of leave so I can have a break between jobs. I’m aware of superannuation not being paid on top of lump sums so that is also a driver for my decision.

I feel as though I have quite a good relationship with my manager and the company. I’ve also finished/handed over most projects I was assigned to. I don’t want to burn bridges, but the job I am moving to is a complete career pivot so the motivation/benefit of my current work is non existent. I want to negotiate an earlier release and am unsure how to go about it. I am in a junior role, this is my first white collar job and i’ve been at the company for just under a year.

Any/all advice is appreciated.

Cheers

Hi all,

Context:

Started my first corporate job as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer last August and I am about to give my letter of resignation this Friday. I never really liked the job I’m currently in, only reason I took it was because it’s stable and I needed something better than a casual job. I’ve only been there 6 months so I’m still in the “graduate program” phase. I liked the idea of working in engineering and always found it interesting but just not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Thought about changing to something else from time to time but never acted on it etc.

I ran into a couple friends on a night out about a month ago, we were talking about work, the usual etc. They had mentioned they needed more junior staff and were hiring. I jokingly said I would apply and they suggested I do. This was a drunken conversation so I didn’t think much of it until one of them texted me the next morning to send in my CV,(They’re in commercial real estate). Next thing I know, I’m having a coffee with one of the directors at the company and i’m pitching myself as to why I’m worth a shot.

I just received a call this morning from their talent acquisition explaining I had got the job and they are expecting me to start late May-early June. It’s a complete career pivot and I am very excited, always had impressive soft and interpersonal skills or so I’ve been told.

The last step is to now tell my boss and senior mentor that I’m leaving. I feel incredibly guilty, as they have spent a lot of time and effort teaching me and developing my skills. I just need a blueprint on what I should do and say, and how I should go about the whole process. I feel as though I have a good relationship with my boss and fellow colleagues. Just need some guidance.

Thanks guys
