One thing I personally don't understand is how you can move between different industries. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and have 3 years of experience in manufacturing and design. I have looked at other jobs in industries such as oil and gas and building HVAC that technically fits under the umbrella of mechanical engineering but I have no idea how I can get into them.

Jobs in those industries require years of experience in those specific industries and specific skillsets. Ex: Pipeline design for oil and gas, which I can't get by doing things like designing industrial equipment.

I was wondering how its even possible moving between industries when they require very different skillsets or if its even worthwhile. I don't particularily hate my current niche but I want to move back to my home city which is dominated by the oil and gas industry.
