Hi everyone, I’m new here and from New Jersey. I’ve been struggling with severe MDD (major depressive disorder) and panic disorder for about 12 years, and it has heavily impacted my daily life, ability to function, concentration, sleep, and work performance.

I’m currently still working because financially I can’t afford to stop, but mentally it’s becoming harder and harder to keep going. Over the years I’ve also been on and off STD/FMLA due to my condition, so there’s already a documented history of how much this has affected my ability to maintain consistent work.

I’m trying to understand how SSDI works when you’re still employed and what steps I should be taking now. Should I start gathering medical records, treatment history, STD/FMLA paperwork, and documentation from my doctors regarding my limitations? Is it smarter to speak with an SSDI attorney before even applying?

If anyone here has gone through this while still trying to work because bills don’t stop, I’d really appreciate hearing your experience or any advice. Thanks for welcoming me into the group.
