I’m curious how others feel about this because it doesn’t sit right with me.

At USF, a $15 parking ticket can turn into $40 if it’s not paid quickly:
- $15 original fine
- Doubled to $30
- + $10 “collections/admin” fee

That’s a 166% increase. Imagine being a day late on your rent payment and the late fee brings your rent from $800 to $2,128. That’s the equivalent of what’s happening here.

I understand late fees exist everywhere—but what’s the actual limit here? What’s stopping that admin fee from being $50… or $100… or more, especially when PATS has people comment in this subreddit regularly talking about how they are self-funded.

This isn’t about dodging responsibility. If you park wrong, you should pay something. But there should probably be reasonable caps or guardrails, especially at public universities.

I’m wondering if this is worth bringing up to student reps or even pushing for legislation around fee caps for public institutions.

Would love to hear if others have dealt with this or have more info.

Edit to share: this was my only run in with parking. I paid for a spot for 2 hours, and my meeting went 2 hours and 10 minutes. There was no warning, and I was fully convinced I paid the ticket on the day it was issued.
