Hi! I have a triathlon coming up in less than 2 months, but will be traveling in Japan for several weeks before then. I want to try to keep up at least some of my training while there. I figure I can easily run outdoors, but am not sure whether it will be possible for me to do at least some cycling workouts (indoors, ideally) and swimming while there.

  1. Do most gyms have indoors bikes available? If so, does anyone know if clipping in is common in Japan, and if so, which cleats are most often used? I am wondering if it is worth bringing my cycling shoes +/- pedals. I have Look Delta and KEO cleats, but also have cleat adapters which would allow me to use SPD cleats if need be.

  2. Any thoughts/suggestions with regards to keeping up swimming while in Japan? I figure I can purchase a drop-in pass to a pool, but was mostly wondering if there was anything regarding etiquette, etc. I should be aware of. I want to make sure I am as respectful as possible. (Side note: I do not have any tattoos.)

I understand that a lot of folks would say to just enjoy my trip and not bother with training, but it is important to me to keep up at least a bit of my training while there. I am mostly aiming at getting 1-2 sessions per week of swimming and cycling to try and not lose all the fitness I've worked so hard to build. I would appreciate any suggestions if anyone has had any similar experiences!
