Hypokalemia or hypophosphatemia?
I’m confused about an AnKing/Pixorize card and wanted to get some clarification from people who know the pharm better than I do.
The flashcard asks:
“What electrolyte imbalance is common to all antacids?”
and the answer given is: Hypokalemia.
However, I’m struggling to find a solid primary or board‑style source that actually states “all antacids cause hypokalemia” as a general rule. Most clinical/pharm resources I’ve checked emphasize that chronic use of some antacids (especially aluminum‑ or calcium‑containing) can lead to hypophosphatemia, sometimes with secondary hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis, but they don’t present hypokalemia as a classic effect that’s shared by all antacids.
So my questions are:
- Is there a specific First Aid / UWorld / AMBOSS line or table that explicitly says “all antacids → hypokalemia”?
- Or is this more of a teaching shorthand / overgeneralization that crept into some decks and videos?
