Do automotive electrical techs need to work as mechanics first?

Hi everyone. I’m considering switching from IT to automotive electrics and trying to understand how it works abroad.

In my country auto electricians/diagnostic techs and mechanics are separate jobs, but online I keep reading that in many countries they’re basically combined. Is it true that to become a diagnostic tech you usually have to work as a mechanic first and still do a lot of mechanical work?

I love cars and have basic hands-on experience, but I’m not looking to do heavy mechanical work long-term. I’d like to eventually work for myself, or would it make more sense to choose a regular electrician trade instead? Curious what the real career path looks like where you live.
