Books that feel like a capriccio painting?

I recently discovered the term capriccio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capriccio_(art) ) for a certain style of painting, and I’m absolutely spellbound by them. I’m wondering if there are any books that feel like one? Living in ruins, wonder at the past, our own insignificance and mortality, decay, with or without a touch of the fantastic. Ideally something more “literary”, though literary fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction are fine (I’m looking for something more contemplative than escapist).

I’ve already read and really enjoyed Piranesi, the Broken Earth Trilogy and various stories by Borges, which are similar but not quite what I’m looking for.
