Cat has eye discharge during renovations

My 3 year old cat has sneezed daily or several times a week for at least a year now. I mentioned it to the vet and he wasn’t concerned. He’s never had any nasal or eye discharge.

We’ve been ripping up the carpet upstairs this week to put in new flooring so I put up a gate at the top of the stairs to keep our cats from going there. Unfortunately in one of the rooms there was mold on the floor against the wall from a previous roof leak that was fixed. It was over a year ago that we noticed the leak in our closet, which is under the room, so I’m suspicious the sneezing could’ve started because of the mold. Now there’s the issue of him having eye discharge all day today. He’s not squinting and he’s acting normal but I suspect that’s from ripping up the carpet in the hallway and removing the mold covered carpet yesterday to dispose of. We have not tackled the mold in the floor yet. My husband won’t be able to look at it until Sunday.

Is there anything I can do to protect my cat until this is fixed? My other cat is fine so I don’t know if this one is sensitive to the mold and dust or if he has something like feline herpes and not being able to go upstairs to their playrooms may be stressing him out and causing this. Also, at what point would a vet visit be needed? The discharge is very light colored like an off white to pale yellow and it’s both eyes. He hasn’t been sneezing and has no nasal discharge.

Do you get annoyed or like when pet parents bring a list of concerns to ask?

My lab has a yearly scheduled in a couple of weeks. I have a lot of stuff to go over from possible arthritis to reflux. There are questions I have and tests/x-rays I’d like to get done but to remember everything I want to talk about I write it down, I take videos, if there’s a lump I shave it beforehand to find it easier while we’re there and I write down all new behaviors in case they happen to be important. I don’t want to overwhelm the vet and usually I don’t ask many things while we’re there because one time the other vet (now retired) charged us for two visits for asking to have a lump checked. Now that my lab is 7 I feel like there’s a lot going on that I want to talk about. I have 30 minutes to do it (I asked the receptionist when I made the appointment). Is this something you find annoying at your practice? Is it better to read off my notes or just hand them over and should I bring everything up or just pick what I feel to be most important?

What do you notice when watching my dog walk?

For two years since he was 5 I’ve noticed my dog is walking strange in the front, like his shoulders are stiff. It was very subtle at 5 so I apparently was the only one that could tell. No one else has noticed this. He went on a diet to get rid of the extra weight, went on Cosequin, then switched to dasuquin with msm, and will be switching to dasuquin senior. We switched his food from Costco lamb to Purina Pro Plan Salmon for higher protein and because he was having reflux on the lamb we figured the lower fat would be beneficial. He has a yearly in a couple of weeks. I already brought up to the vet I suspect he has arthritis and he said Dasuquin was one of the things they recommended. I’m becoming more worried though because he’s so young how could he be walking so slow and stiff? I know the temperature plays a part and he’s always slowed down around 70 but he’s just as slow at 60 degrees F and even below. In the winter he was trotting and now he walks like he’s 16.
