Simulacrum Trouble 5e 2014
Okay, so here's the situation. I'm in a campaign that finished Phandelver and Below and moved into Vecna Eve of Ruin to continue to lvl 20. We hit lvl 13 and my Bladesinger Shadar kai is now capable of casting Simulacrum. I get the feeling my DM just doesn't want me using the spell.
POSSIBLE EVE OF RUIN SPOILERS FROM HERE DOWN!!!
My intention was to set up the Sim with the ability to cast some spells I don't normally prepare and at the very least, Greater Invisibility. So he can hold concentration on that while I hold it on Shadow Blade or Spirit Shroud.
DM seemed almost frustrated that I was going to cast it. For EofR we spend most of our downtime in Sigil with Alustriel and her wife at their home. Simulacrum is supposed to take 12 hours to cast. So that means we get back to Sigil from where ever we are in the multiverse, catch up the NPC's on our progress, then take a long rest.
That long rest is when I set my spells to be what I want the Sim to have. The idea being that it takes the day to cast the spell, then my PC gets another long rest to change his spells back to what's best for him to have prepared. I didn't think this would be that big of a deal. But with this DM's games (always official modules) there is little to no downtime. It's GO GO GO at all times or the BBEG will win. So he hurried up the spell casting time with help from Alustriel from 12 to 2 hours. So we could get back to adventuring which is what he really likes to do. I think the DM likes to play encounters more than RP stuff is my take. At first I thought, "Well cool, let's go".
Then when we got to the next place and I was stuck with the Simulacrum's spell list, the Sim was back in Sigil waiting for an item that would help him be useful, and my spells are not appropriate for my playstyle.
He isn't a big Wizard user, prefers Sorcerer instead. He's left a lot of Wizard rules up to me to figure out and use appropriately. I had found several arguments as to why a Wizard Simulacrum could be able to use a spellbook in order to change it's prepared spells. He considers that to be getting stronger. The arguments I found to the counter is, it's not getting stronger, as the OG Wiz knows these spells. I get what/how this may not be Rules as Intended. But for 2014, the rules we are using, that's not in the spell wording. In the 2024 rules they changed it to the Sim can't take long or short rests. They also added "except that it is a construct" to the end of the first paragraph in both 24 and 14 versions. Yet the wording still says it is a "creature" too. But if it can't take short or long rests, then can it get exhaustion? Is it a creature or a construct? How can it be both?
Pretty much I won't be able to take another long rest to change my prepared spells back on the original Wizard if I want to use this spell. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good way to make this work? I don't want to run around with an exhausted Simulacrum nor the OG Wizard with the wrong spells.
