My home has at least 3 (but I'm certain there is a 4th under the deck that is less accessible) of these square brick holes sunk ~3 feet into the ground. They do not seem to open into the house and two of them are covered in a heavy wire mesh.

Any idea what they were (are ?) originally meant for? I want to cover them up but I'm reluctant to do anything without knowing what they are for or what purpose they might serve.

Any help is much appreciated!
