This morning me, and a bunch of other pedestrians, had to walk out into the middle of the road 3-4 times where there were cars completely blocking the sidewalks.

1 had a lady in the car, who at least looked apologetic, the other three were just parked with nobody inside to care.

I had a daydream about a james bond style knife that pops out of the front of my shoe so I can slash some tires without getting caught by the cameras. Sitting in my office I scotch taped a pen to my shoe and had great trouble kicking through a cardboard box, so I don't think that's going to work.

I've been to San Fransisco where the militant pedestrians bang on and try to dent the hood of any car poking into a crosswalk when the pedestrian light turns green. That city is otherwise a shithole, but maybe they've got the right idea.

What Chinese search terms should I use on taobao for tiny tire eating caltrops?

Any other suggestions?

Okay, it won't help a ton, but it's free and can be implemented tomorrow: Have traffic cops treat pedestrians as human beings.

This week I've been walking from home to a clinic every morning and I need to cross the intersection east of Shangrila. It's absolutely ridiculous -- every day this week I've spent at least 8 minutes waiting for the pedestrian light to turn green. Yesterday I waited at the pedestrian crossing for over 20 minutes before I just crossed with a group while the traffic cop yelled at us. Our light had turned green twice in that time but he was telling the pedestrians to stop and was waving traffic through. Not a motorcade or anything.

It's only about 1km from my apartment, but I'm going to drive tomorrow--I think it will actually be faster not to mention quieter and more comfortable.
