Hello!
I am planning to buy a NAS to keep at my home, which will serve as an all-in-one backup for me and my family. There are 2 PCs and many Phones which i want to get backed up to this NAS automatically. I don't (YET) plan to work directly from this NAS, but i can imagine many instances when i may need to play back large video files (4k work files or just movies in general) remotely from a phone or laptop.
Additionally i would love to have easy-to-use configuration systems where i can give multiple family members different access to selected folders, and make publicly sharable files over the internet (and it'd be awesome to be able to do these through my phone as well).
So my main use cases :
- Multiple PCs -> back up to NAS
- Multiple Phones -> Back up to NAS
- Decent file sharing access and video playback remotely.
In the future I may think about using this NAS as my primary storage and use a new one as a complete backup (probably off-site).
Since i am from India, thanks to insane import duties, these things are wildly expensive.
Synology doesn't appeal to me, but i am not completely opposed to it either - open to what everyone has to say.
The only other NAS brand easily available here is QNAP.
I am wondering if QNAP TS-216G is going to be future-proof and powerful enough for my use case? Or do i have to sell a kidney and get QNAP TS-464 instead?
Also, how will 216G perform as an off-site purely backup system in, let's say, 10 years from now?
Any tips? Additional info i may be missing out on? Anything helps. I would really like to NOT spend money on the TS-464, but if 216g does not work for me, i might as well wait a few months and save up for 464.
Thanks in advance 😄
