What if the Indian subcontinent chose to be a federation?
This one of my biggest what ifs?
Its 1940-47, the INC and Muslim league seeing the rising sectarian tensions and also acknowledging the issue of princely states agreed to implement the federal model (similar to UAE).
The subcontinent has been divided into a similar version of the Mughal provinces.
The choosing governors of each state would follow the same state elections model present in modern day India.
The rulers of larger princely states (e.g Hyderabad, mysore, Kashmir) would be allowed to
rule their respective princely states until their death, after which the next rulers would be chosen through an election. While smaller (e.g the ones in gujarat and rajasthan) princely states would be merged into a single province.
The minorities in each province/state would have reservations in political offices.
How would y’all think this work out.
I personally feel like this (or a similar model) would have reduced most of the religious and ethnic tensions which took place later on
