How serious of a problem are carpet beetles?

I recently moved into a new apartment with my friend and a couple days ago my friend found a carpet beetle larva in her bath mat, then in the carpeting of her room the next day, and has found a couple more since then despite vacuuming her entire room each time she finds any (I only saw the first two and one other so I have no idea how many she’s actually seen). Our apartment only has carpeting in the bedrooms which are separated by a hallway so I haven’t seen any in my room yet. However, my roommate has been pretty freaked out about this so she’s moving out next week even though we’ve literally only been here a week. We’re both students and this is our first ever apartment so I’m a bit frustrated about this situation since it kind of forces me to move out too but that’s besides the point.

Basically I want to better understand how serious carpet beetles actually are because I don’t think it’s really that big a deal, but at the same time, I’m not the one being affected by them (yet).

Some extra info: from what I know the apartment was not lived in for around a year before we moved in, we were told that it was professionally cleaned but we’re a little skeptical of this (😆), we’ve only seen larva so far, and this is in Ontario.

Sorry for the rant and I’m not sure if this really fits here but idk where else it would.

My summer plans ended up changing at the last second so I missed the window for applying to labs and internships and the things I did apply for I either got a rejection or no reply. Is there anything I can do over the summer that will help strengthen my application for the fall? I’m just finishing up my first year (in Canada if that matters) and I don’t really have any lab experience other than my lab courses :(

Thanks in advance :)
