A plant has appeared in a pot on my garden here in Ireland that I thought was a dock until the flower stalk appeared. A bit of research revealed it to be a bistort, which can be differentiated from a dock by the winged petioles. So I now know that a petiole is a leafstalk, but nowhere can I find a picture illustrating these so-called wings.
