Can’t join fandoms because writing within a fandom is too creatively limiting
More specifically fandoms based off a piece of media. I grow a big interest in a new fandom only to leave disappointed because I get more excited by the fanmade content than the actual canon. And I’m upset by the fanmade content because I know that most will never become official either. I will give some examples:
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic pandered to the Bronies so much that it ended up ruining its own reputation with kids and parents so it reverted back to a generic little kids show with Generation 5 before cancelling it. Most of the fandom died out by then with the fanmade content carrying little of what’s left. I can’t work with this because it is a show limited to TV-Y and really well done fanmade content is under risk of excessive cease and desists.
Warrior Cats: The Multi-Animator Projects are awesome but I would have to read a whole series of books to understand the context behind them. An ongoing and unending series of books written by a whole bunch of inconsistent ghostwriters never wanting to give up their cash cow. I can’t work with this because there are too many in universe rules to follow so many creators resort to AUs for their content. And even that is too limiting for me, from the group clan dynamics to the very way characters are named. Obviously can’t be turned into a proper animated series so the closest we can get are the graphic novels.
Glee: To give a positive example of something that actually works for me and my creativity is the show Glee. Not the original finished show though, I’d rather write my own “Gleeboot” that takes place in a whole different school with different people but written under the exact same premise. I love how Glee for the first time turns the jukebox musical into a tv series. My experiences in high school were very much like Glee so it is relatable to me and I feel like I would be a good fit for writing a reboot of the show if I was ever selected to do one.
I get especially annoyed when I see people online saying that they are so upset by how a piece of media turned out that they want to make their own rewrite of the whole series. They are just passion projects that will never be made official, if they can’t change them into a uniquely different work and IP of their own, then why bother making them? Working within fandoms is just so creatively limiting to me that I am left with no choice but to create my own original series that borrows elements from every fandom that I’ve known and been a part of, in hopes that I can soon create a fandom of my own that I can be successful in.
