Movies where a happy/innocent/child-like character goes through a major transformation(Trauma)

What the title says. Don't know if this maybe is a bit too niche but I see this trope a lot in Anime where you have a character who starts out as this warm, fun, social, empathetic person who then goes through some kind of traumatic event that changes them completely, usually turning them into a cynical, cold, jaded, somber character. Mainly what I want to see depicted in the film is the idea that people are simply humans in the end, and sometimes can't heal from trauma at all.

I know lots of movies in the horror/war genre which has this kind of trope half-baked into the story, but I never find that they focused on any one character and explored the depths of their experiences, mainly focusing more on the big picture/the traumatic event itself. As a result I don't tend to feel connected enough to the character to feel bad for them.

A few good examples of movies with this trope that nicely balances te character aspect and the "horrors" aspect that I've seen is Come and See (1985) and Scarecrow (1973) with Al Pacino's character. Would love to hear you guys' recommendations.
