Today, one thing must be said clearly.

Calling Sylheti a “Bangladeshi language” is not just ignorance — it is an insult to history.

Whether it is the recent remark of Mamata Banerjee, the earlier careless statements by BJP IT Cell members, or the racism often faced by Sylheti and Bengali-speaking people in their own state — all of it is unacceptable.

Sylheti is not some imported identity.
It is an ancient linguistic and cultural heritage rooted in the Barak-Surma region.
Its speakers have contributed, sacrificed, and served this nation for generations.

Bipin Chandra Pal, one of India’s great freedom fighters, came from the soil of Sylhet.
Many people of Sylheti origin stood against British rule and played their role in India’s freedom struggle.

In 1961, the Language Martyrs of Barak Valley gave their lives to defend their mother tongue and their dignity.
To disrespect Sylheti identity today is to disrespect that sacrifice.

Languages cannot be measured by political borders.
Punjabi is not limited to Pakistan, Bengali is not limited to Bangladesh, Tamil is not limited to Sri Lanka — and Sylheti too cannot be reduced to one nation’s label.

The Sindhi community lost its homeland, yet India gave them dignity, recognition, and respect.
Then why should Sylheti language and identity be denied the same respect?

Sylheti is our heritage.
It is Indian, historical, and deeply rooted in this land.

Now is the time for Sylhetis to take their own stand and strongly condemn every such insult with unity and confidence.

Jai Hind. Joy Sylheti, Joy Bangla. ✊
