Last week my dog stayed with my dad and spend most of the day outside in the yard. I arrived in the afternoon, and at some point caught her eating fertilizer granules. I got to her quickly, but I’m still worried she might have eaten more in the morning when I was not there.
I want to call the vet tomorrow morning, but am wondering if i should insist for bloodwork or something else if the vet dismisses my concerns?
She had some mild “symptoms”, but these could also be due to other circumstances. She is a german shepherd mix, around 22 kilos.
- She had been sleeping more than usual. (Could also be because she is now 2,5 years old and more mature)
- She got tired after a 15 minute walk l, waliking slowly behind me, instead of in front like she usually does. (But it was also a warm, sunny day)
- Is not eating well. (But has always been a picky eater and does take treats)
- Her gums look pale to me, at least much paler than usual. But I am not sure if this is a normal color or pointing to anemia?
I guess I’m kind of extra worried because last year my dad had to put down his dog because she had severe anemia and basically no red blood cells left. Which I think may have been caused by lawn fertilizer, since it seemed quite sudden, (which when I found out I warned him not to use it again, because of its toxicity to animals and children).
(2nd picture just for cute :) )
Edit: Thanks for the advice, I will call the emergency vet to check if we need to come in tonight and otherwise will go to the normal vet first thing in the morning.
