Complete beginner seeking advice & encouragement
Hi!
TLDR: complete beginner seeking positive advice and encouragement for how to begin a trip. Really would love some advice on buying a used bike!
A little over a year ago I became enthralled with the idea of bikepacking as a form of travel. I love outdoor recreation like hiking and camping, and I have a lot of experience with those, but absolutely zero experience bikepacking. I’ve had one hell of a last year and I feel the pull and calling of bikepacking as a way to process it all, heal, and move forward with my life in a positive, connective way. I’ve been able to solo travel for the first time in the last year, visiting six different countries. I’m hooked, but realized while doing that traveling that I really want to go slow, be intentional, and really connect with the landscapes I am passing through. In the last few months I was able to obtain a working-holiday visa in Australia. While I will need to work to support my travels, I started concocting a plan to obtain a bicycle and bikepack here, using the bike as a mode of transportation and a way to see the country and meet its people. I’m giving this story so you all have some context and can know that I’m really determined to make this a reality.
What I’ve done so far: I’ve joined some WhatsApp group chats, watched a bunch of videos and documentaries, visited Bikepacking.com religiously, read about packing lists and essential vs nonessential gear, and know about some apps like Warmshowers and CamperMate.
Just a few day ago I landed in Australia and so begins the hard part: starting. I’m writing to ask for advice & help into buying a used bike, and other gear like racks, etc. I brought some camping gear with me and paneer bags that were my mom’s.
I’ve thought about visiting bike shops, but I’m a little wary that I might be laughed out of the place based on my lack of experience. I’m certainly very brave, but I’m also a young woman and I know there’s many men who would like to tell me this is a bad idea and that I shouldn’t think about doing it solo while so inexperienced.
Here’s the thing, I’ve got a year. I’m happy to go as slow as I need to and take breaks and learn as I go. I’m very competent and know my limits. I’m not looking for a “reality check” or anything negative in the comments. I am looking for positive advice, encouragement, or any other tidbits as I begin to start making this huge dream a reality :)
