The history of the Calder Trophy having near-unanimous votes with Schaefer becoming just the 2nd unanimous winner of Rookie of the Year

For those wondering, the only other unanimous Calder champion is Teemu Selanne for his 76 goal campaign; other Calder votes have come close (and likely should have been unanimous) but did not get a unanimous winner.

The Calder winners with less than 10 voters going against the overwhelming favourite since 2000 are:

2020-2021 season - 99/100 for Kaprizov, 1 for Jason Robertson

2017-2018 season - 160/164 for Barzal, 2 for Boeser, 1 for Keller, 1 for Gourde

2016-2017 season - 164/167 for Matthews, 3 for Laine

2013-2014 season - 130/137 for Mackinnon, 5 for Palat, 1 for Krug, 1 forTrouba

2005-2006 season - 124/129 for Ovechkin, 4 for Crosby, 1 for Lundqvist

Awards Ballots only became public as of a PHWA vote in March 2018, so the only ones above where we know who voted against the expected winners were in 2017-2018 and 2020-2021.

In 2017-2018, John Dietz of the Arlington Daily Herald & Roy McGregor of the Globe & Mail voted for Boeser, with Jim Thomas of St. Louis Post-Dispatch voting for Keller, and Gann Matsuda of Frozen Royalty voting for Gourde.

In 2020-2021, the lone voter who chose Robertson over Kaprizov was Per Bjurman of Aftonbladet.

For one interesting fact as well, the 2012-2013 season saw Huberdeau and Gallagher tie with 54 first place votes each. The big decider in that year was 2nd place votes, with Huberdeau getting 55, and Gallagher getting just 44.

Kypreos on the reasoning inside MLSE for why Berube is still the Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs

"I would believe if there wasn't some people pulling for Craig Berube inside the Maple Leafs organization, Chayka would probably lean towards getting rid of him." - Nick Kypreos

The Leafs Nation interviews 3 time NCAA champion head coach at the University of Denver, and back to back WJC gold medal winning head coach David Carle about his work after winning another title, his potential NHL coaching future, and coaching against potential first overall pick Gavin McKenna.

Personally, he has been my choice for new Head Coach since before Berube was hired back in 2024, and I still believe he is the man for the job. He is just 36 years old, but a better resume than almost anyone else has in their pre-NHL coaching careers, and has recused himself from prior NHL coaching searches as he has said he won't leave Denver unless he believes its the right fit for his career and his young family.

Berube knows he’ll have to be better next year and still holds a good relationship with Keith Pelley.

People joining the organization want to get to know the people currently working with the team—especially those still under contract, like Craig Berube (2 more years).

“It would be surprising if Berube isn’t on the bench at the start of the year.”

EDIT: (Including Chayka's comments from the press conference on Berube)

Chayka: I talked to Craig last night. He is a guy who has been a respected leader for decades in the National Hockey League. I think he is a tremendous coach, a Stanley Cup coach, and a good person.

We had a good conversation. It was brief. We will get together later this week with Mats and go through it all. Mats and I are coming in as outsiders. He spent the past few years with the team. We want to listen, learn, understand his perspective, and go forward from there.

We are now less than 7 full days away from finding out if Toronto will keep their own first round pick this year, or if Boston will get pick 6 or 7 from us in the 2026 NHL Draft.

I ran the Draft lottery simulator 200 times, getting:

1st: 18 (9%)

2nd: 21 (10.5%)

3rd: 0 (0%)

5th: 42 (21%)

6th: 98 (49%)

7th: 21 (10.5%)

Keep the pick: 81 (40.5%)

Lose the pick: 119 (59.5%)

This is pretty in line with actual odds, where we are expected to keep the pick approximately 43.5% of the time, and lose it 56.5% of the time.

Ultimately, whether we keep the pick and draft a McKenna, Stenberg, Malhotra, Reid, Smits, Carels, or Verhoeff, is essentially a coin flip.

If we keep the pick, it also locks into transferring our 2027 and 2028 picks to Philadelphia & Boston, so it essentially eliminates tanking or any rebuild as a possibility until after the 2028 season is over. If we lose the pick to Boston, we keep our 2027 if we end up in the top 10, transferring to Philadelphia in 2028, or of we transfer the pick to Boston and don't finish bottom 10/win a lottery in 2027, we go back to having our first round picks for the 2028 Draft.

SDA is planning to return to Toronto for the 2026-2027 per his Agent. They previously had discussions about a return with Brad Treliving, and are waiting for the new GM to be named to continue/formalize discussions to (hopefully for SDA) return to the Maple Leafs organization. His contract with Dynamo in the KHL expires May 31st.

In the 2025-26 KHL regular season, Der-Arguchintsev played 59 games for Traktor and Dynamo, recording 36 points (six goals, 30 assists).

“I believe Semyon is ready for the NHL. Of course, he is ready for the possibility of playing in the AHL, but there is no point in going there just for that. We are talking about a one-way contract with a salary closer to the league minimum." Babaev said.
