I’ve been applying to HR roles in tech for a while now but haven’t received any callbacks just rejection emails. My background originally started in science and research, and I completed a pre-med track before realizing medicine wasn’t the right fit for me.

During that time, I took a role in a medical office within a school district to stay employed, and eventually I was promoted into HR. Now I’m handling HR responsibilities in that setting, but I’m struggling to transition into tech/any other sector.

I can’t tell if I’m being overlooked because my experience is within a school district, or if I’m not positioning my background effectively. Is there a bias against candidates coming from government or education roles? And how can I better position myself to make the leap into HR in a tech company?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Hello, [30F] I’d really like to build a career within a tech company but right now I feel pretty stuck. I currently work for a school district where I essentially handle HR on my own. I’ve been responsible for creating processes, implementing systems, and managing day to day HR functions with very little support. On top of that, I also am the executive assistant to the superintendent and the board.

While I’m grateful for the growth and responsibility, I’m starting to feel burnt out and isolated. Sometimes my team joke that I am the party pooper Toby from the office🫠. I am an INTJ in HR!! I want to be part of a strong collaborative team where I can learn from others and continue developing my skills.

My background is a bit non-traditional--- I studied psychology, interned and volunteered in labs, and originally planned to go into medicine. I completed a post bacc pre-med program with the intention of applying to PA school, but after getting clinical experience during COVID, I realized that path wasn’t right for me. I took a medical office assistant role in a school district to stay employed during that time, and that’s how I ended up transitioning into HR since they promoted me.

Now I feel like I’ve drifted away from the more analytical/technical side of my interests, and I’m trying to figure out how to pivot into HR in a tech environment.

I've been applying to any HR job I see that is in within edtech, tech, finance, biotech and have been rejected from all. What am I doing wrong?

Any specific feedback would be great or anything at all really

Thank you!
