Hi guys. I wanted some opinions on this. I have ROG Ally for a year now and I'm very unhappy with the experience. Too many random notifications about updates and too many updates from too many channels (Chrome updating itself, Armory crate updating itself, firmware and driver updates through armory crate, driver updates through window updates, windows updates themselves, MS store application updates, steam updating itself, etc). I feel like every time I pick it after 2-3 weeks of not touching I get several different kinds of update notifications from different channels and have to spend 20 min satisfying them one after another, with windows updates wanting you to reboot, driver/HAL/etc update through armory crate wanting you to update armory crate itself first, which literally takes like a minute before I can even start updating drivers, all other updates taking way longer than they are supposed to. I literally only play my android devices (Odin 3 & RP Flip 2 currently) and dread to touch Ally.

I'm also having random lags in games not because the power is not enough but because some update or windows antivirus or some service decides to do something in background. My OS is relatively clean yet this happens.

Other big issue is have is with touch keyboard, it often pops up when I don't need it, resize of other windows is not reliable, sometimes it does it and sometimes it just covers the text form I need to fill so I have to switch it manually to floating mode and move around, sometimes it doesn't open when needed (so I have to open asus panel and activate it from there) and so on. Plus taskbar behavior and resizing windows is very inconvenient.

Please give me some suggestion how to make it usable. Try Xbox focused experience mode (I heard it removes extra services, making OS more lightweight and improving UI), install Steam OS, install Bazzite, install CachyOS? I have upgraded to 2 TB SSD and over 1 TB free space so I can install another OS.

My worries about alternative OS:

SteamOS - need to go through tricks to install it as dual boot without reinstalling windows, some people say it doesn't work on ROG Ally regarding power profiles / fan, but I just read news about 3.9 release that supports Ally so maybe not an issue anymore? (which made me write this post). I know that dual boot installation is tricky but I can do that.

Bazzite - apparently has fixes for power profiles / fan but some things not as convenient as steamos, according to rumors, immutable OS design creates complications and overall the performance is not the best. Dual boot from standard installer, though.

CachyOS - according to everyone it's the fastest performing option which is important for low power handheld with small battery, can be installed dual boot, but I'm not sure it offers quite the steamos level of interaction and convenience. Dual boot from standard installer, best optimizations

Which way should I go, or should I give the current solution another try by cleaning things up somehow? I can give installing of other OS a go but one at most, so at least I should pick the best option out of 3...
