Why most startup branding in India looks forgettable?
A pattern I keep noticing with a lot of Indian startups is that everyone is trying to look “modern” in the exact same way.
Same gradients, minimal logos, generic sans-serif fonts, “clean” Instagram aesthetic, fast cut reels with motivational music. And after a point, everything starts blending together. I don’t think the issue is lack of talent. India genuinely has amazing designers, filmmakers and creative people right now. The real problem is that most startups build branding like a checklist instead of a personality.
They ask:
Does it look premium?
Does it look like a startup?
Does it look international?
But almost nobody asks:
Will people remember this 3 days later?
The brands that actually stick in your head usually have imperfections, opinions, emotion, weirdness, or some kind of human energy behind them. Even many small local businesses feel more memorable sometimes because they accidentally have character. Another thing I’ve noticed is that founders heavily underestimate storytelling in visuals.
People don’t remember camera quality.
They remember feeling.
You can shoot on an iPhone and still create a memorable brand if the emotion and identity are strong enough. Meanwhile I’ve seen startups spend lakhs on polished videos that feel completely empty after 10 seconds. I honestly think AI is going to make this even more obvious.
Because once everyone can generate “good-looking” visuals instantly, branding itself won’t matter as much anymore.
Personality will.
Curious if others here feel the same way, or if I’m overthinking this.
