1 Synology with an SSD and HDD pool. How to minimise drive spin up?

Hey all,

I am setting up a new to me DS923+

I have 2 pools and 2 volumes - a Worker volume on an SSD Pool with 2x 4TB SSDs and Vault volume on an HDD pool with 2x 8TB HDDs

As the volume names imply, my goal is for all the work to happen on the Worker - with SSD speed and quietness.

Then, the Vault volume is there for less frequently accessed data (and because I cannot afford more SSDs right now). Mainly it houses the old part of my photo catalog and my media for Jellyfin.

This seems to be working wonderfully. The drives barely spin up. But they do still spin up and rattle every few minutes.

So, I wonder how can I take it to the max. And make things maximum quiet.

I am aware, after my last post, that DSM is on all drives and will wake the spinning ones to update the configs across all drives.

And, of course, I have some processes like backups of my photos and storage pool maintenance that wake up the spinning drives. That is unavoidable. And of course of course, when we watch something, it spins up the drives. Also expected.

But what settings, setup etc can I make sure to check and set to make it possible for the spinning drives to spin down most of the time. Perhaps even hibernate. It’s just a family NAS that most of the time does little.

Migration to a new box with DSM in SATA SSD Pool

Hey I have a DS216+ that yas been going solid for years but just scored an upgraded DS923+.

I could just migrate the discs. But part of what I am adding is an SSD pool that will also house the DSM. I want the NAS to be silent most of the time and only access the hard drives when needed.

I wonder whether my plan is sound and simplest possible.

  1. I initialize the new box with just the SSD pool. Install apps. Etc.
  2. I remove one of the dries from the old NAS. I presume I’ll have to reformat it and copy over all the data to make it now a “secondary pool”. I the just the colder data that does not fit in the SSD pool. Is that so?
  3. Once the first drive is migrated I can migrate the second drive from the old bad to the new one.

Is there a simpler way? Could I initialize the new box with the ssd only and just pop in both drives from 216+ and migrate the pool?
