Hey all! I'm writing a paper about symbolic matricide in cinema and I'm looking for some horror movies where the main (or one of the main characters) is a girl or young woman, and her mother is either a figurative or literal monster. Most importantly, the daughter is the one who defeats her. So far. I've got Carrie (1976), The Witch (2015), and Evil Dead Rise (2023).
Searching online has been really difficult. There are plenty of lists and essays out there about monstrous moms, but all the ones I'm finding are mothers to sons or "neutralized" by a third party. I'm looking specifically for films where the daughter is the one who defeats her mother. I'd really like to expand my examples as much as possible and I just know there have to be more that I'm just not thinking of. Please help?
