I remember reading a book when I was a teen but can’t remember who wrote it or what it was called, exactly. I believe it’s title was a year; ie: 1989 or the like.

The story was about a small town and its inhabitants, the military, and towards the end, a visit by aliens. That’s really all I can remember about the book. It takes place in the 20th century.

I keep telling myself its author was Gore Vidal, but the book title does not come up in searches of his writings.
