How I reduced egg freezing costs through HSA/FSA (took me way too long to figure out)
After months of research I want to put this in one place because I couldn't find it anywhere clearly but for me any help was help so hope it is for you as well:
What's FSA/HSA eligible for egg freezing without an LMN (Letter of Medical Necessity):
Monitoring bloodwork and ultrasounds
Certain supplements (CoQ10, DHEA, vitamin D — if purchased at a pharmacy, not a wellness brand)
OB-GYN visits specifically discussing fertility preservation
What requires an LMN from a physician:
The egg freezing procedure itself and medication, if it's elective (not medically necessary)
Storage fees in some cases
California-specific: If your employer has 100+ employees and is fully-insured (not self-funded), SB 729 passed in 2023 requires coverage for fertility preservation. But most large employers are self-funded and opt out. Worth a 10-minute call to your HR to find out which you are.
The part nobody tells you: You can request an LMN from your OB or REI for elective preservation. Most don't bring it up proactively. You have to ask.
Happy to answer questions — I've been deep in this research and building something in this space.
