Being a notary in an affluent area

Most of the time it’s fine being the only notary in the branch. I helped one lady notarize her signature on a document to affirm she had Italian ancestors so she can apply for Italian citizenship. That was pretty cool. I enjoyed hearing her stories.

I also had another cool couple notarize a basic invoice/contract for a guy to chop up some wood on their property that landed there during a storm. That led to some interesting stories about property they own in another state.

But man, every time an old guy comes in alone it’s always the sketchiest thing he wants.

In 4 weeks I’ve had 2 different old rich white guys try to get me notarize a document that they refused to show me. It’s not a lot but it’s weird it happened twice.

Anyone can stick a notary page on the back of an illegal/non-legitimate document. I refuse to notarize anything I can’t even glance over. And that makes them pissy.

Anyone else get issues like this?

I work in a bank. It’s a very low traffic location and we get maybe 10 walk in customers per day. Usually an old person that just talks to the teller or wants me to reset their online banking password.

Most days I finish all my tasks and have nothing to do for *hours*. So I end up doom scrolling for a while on my phone. In the past I’ve tried to replace it with doing a sudoku puzzle book. But my old manager said I can’t be seen doing that on camera. (There is one right above my cubicle that can see me doing that.)

Then I got a new manager who lost his shit at everyone in the branch for being on their phones. So now I mostly look at job boards on my work computer.

The new manager is starting to ease up a bit on the phone use but I still can’t seem to get away with using anything else, like reading a book. Not without contorting my body to hide it from the camera anyway.

What can I do to alleviate boredom without getting in trouble?

I’m at a very slow branch where not a lot of people come in. But when we do get someone it’s usually an old person that needs something done that takes about 15-30 minutes.

Usually my co-workers pick up the slack but sometimes we’re all busy doing something that takes a few minutes and the clients that come in don’t want to wait.

9/10 times the customer who has to wait for one of us to call them over will huff loudly and stomp out instead of waiting.

Or some will wait and then come over and demand an explanation for why they had to wait. I’ve patiently explained to these people that setting an appointment would insure that they get seen right away. But they never ever call for appointments.

Customers on the phone will also refuse to set a time and just “ho-hum maybe I’ll be there in an hour or maybe I’ll come in sometime tomorrow”.

Like, ma’am “sometime tomorrow” is too much time for me to set aside for you. You can’t refuse to set an appointment and then get mad that I’m seeing another walk in customer that got here before you.

Is this just a boomer thing or does anyone experience this with younger customers too?
