Hello! I’m switching from salary to an hourly based wage. My work schedule is a little weird since I work seven days in a row of twelve hour shifts, which splits the Sunday to Saturday workweek. Due to this, my hours for the work week are un-evenly split with 46 hours being on one week and 34 hrs being on the other week. I recently asked if the 6 hrs from the 46 hour workweek would be classified as overtime, and was told it did not because OT is based on the pay period instead, so I would need to work more than 80 hours to receive any overtime pay. Is this an accurate statement? Can companies choose to evaluate OT eligibility this way?

Side note - I work in healthcare. Under the last job title, I was an exempt employee. I do not know if I will still be exempt with the new job title, but I had assumed it will be changed to non-exempt since I was told I will now be able to pick up shifts or get OT on 80+ hours.
