I live in an area where it is fairly common to see men spit on the ground while walking along outside. Men, why do you do it?

Don't get the wrong idea, I don't mean why do you do it as in "How can you partake in this awful habit," I want to know literally WHY. I've never once felt the need to compulsively spit unless there was mouthwash involved, or let's say if I was spitting at/on something for a specific reason. I've never been walking down the sidewalk and suddenly felt the need to expectorate, as some people (90% men as far as I've observed) seem to. And I'm not talking about when there's tobacco involved either, that's gross but I get why people do it. I'm talking about just plain spit.

What I'm curious about is: how do you "know" when it's time to spit or not? Do you just have too much saliva in your mouth and don't want to swallow it? Was there a gross taste in your mouth that you had to get rid of? Did a bug fly in there? I'm not here to judge whether that's a bad/gross habit or not (I have plenty of my own) but I want to know, what gives you the urge? Why spit at one particular time and not another? What makes your brain tick over into "Yep, it's time" mode for that particular habit?
