I'm getting real tired of the endless paranoia from some people about things like microplastics. And especially the notion that the world has somehow been ruined.
You can find them on pretty much any post where there's plastic involved with cooking. Now, OBVIOUSLY we don't know the full extent of the risks, the effect on the environment and so on but it seems like for some it's become an unhealthy obsession. Pretty often when they're mentioned they're not actually a risk at all and with just the tiniest bit of research regarding material science they'd have been able to figure that out.
"Oh the horror, someone is using a silicone funnel when baking!". It's nearing how "Toxins" is used nowadays in terms of bullshit.
And I keep seeing people reposting news about how "microplastics found in [insert remote area]!!" with them using that to somehow show how bad things have gotten and that nowhere is unpolluted anymore. Newsflash; You've practically always been able to detect human activity in remote areas if your instruments are fine enough. Everything from ancient Roman lead mining to early nuclear tests' effect on the steel used in advanced sensors.
Obviously these are things that need to be studied and something to have informed concern about but I'm getting tired of the endless doom-posting and ignorant fear. This isn't some new dystopian thing and that kid drinking out of a plastic mug is going to be fine. I don't need to see 15 different comments warning about the potential microplastics.
