trouble with knife pleating measurements
I’m having a tough time getting my measurements right. I’m making a 3 tiered sleeve with all layers gathering at the top, which will be above the elbow. I will be doing knife pleats.
The circumference of above the elbow is 9 inches (excluding seam allowance). For the first two layers of the sleeve, I will be using 33 inches of fabric (excluding seam allowance). For the bottom layer, I will be using 40 inches (excluding seam allowance).
I know to divide 33 and 40 by 9, which gives 3.667 inches and 4.44 inches, respectively. I’m stuck here, I just can’t figure out what to do next for some reason.
If need be, to make measurements/ ratios easier, the 9 inch circumference can be increased to as much as 9.5 inches, but based on the way my fabric is cut the 33 inch measurement has to stay the same. The 40 inch measurement can change a few inches either way.
My initial measurements for this project were wrong, but the ratio was much nicer. At first I had the circumference of the top as 11 inches, so the 33 inch measurement was perfect. I had two inches of fabric fold together, and then folded behind to make 3 total inches of fabric used to produce 1 inch (I don’t know the terms for this).
TLDR- how do I figure out measurements for knife pleating when I know the final (pleated) length and the length of the un-pleated edge. Thank you !!!
