At Omaha Beach the 741st Tank Battalion launched 29 ‘floating’ DD tanks three miles offshore in choppy conditions. These were meant to cut through the beach defences and famously their failure is cited as a reason for the high casualty rate.

Of those 29 tanks, only 2 made it to shore. Many of the tanks sank instantly, just disappearing beneath the waves with their crews in them.

If they were sinking so quickly, why did they continue to be launched? Did anyone refuse to drive into the sea?
