Hi everyone, I’m an incoming PhD student at UChicago.

I’ve never rented in Chicago or in the U.S. before, so I’d really appreciate some advice. My stipend will be about $4,750 per month after tax, which seems pretty decent to me, so I’m thinking about renting a studio instead of having roommates.

Would spending around $2,000/month on a nice studio in Hyde Park be a reasonable choice, or would that be considered too expensive for a PhD student budget?

I’d love to hear what current students or people familiar with Hyde Park think.
